Mixtec Photo Album
These pictures date to the 1960s and '70s. They portray life in various Mixtec settlements in the mountains of Oaxaca, the country known as the Alta Mixteca, the birthplace of the Mixtec. Although I took a few of these pictures myself, most were shot by my father Robert Ravicz, an anthropologist and friend to the Mixtec.

Florentino, the Mixteco whose story is told in A Man of His Village, was born in 1971 in the highland village of San Felipe Cahuixtlan, or, in the Mixtec language, Yaa Yucu. These scenes of village life evoke the world into which Florentino was born. They may also evoke a quality of the world into which every one of us is born: it is a changeful world.

These photographs are coprighted. Please don't use them disrespectfully.
